China appreciates PM Narendra Modi's remark, but sticks to its stand on Masood Azhar, NSG issues

BEIJING: China appreciated PM Narendra Modi's "positive remarks" on Wednesday with its foreign ministry saying Beijing is committed to respect India's core interests. Modi had earlier said that neighbouring countries need to show some sensitivity and respect for each other's "core oncerns" and interests.

Nevertheless, the Chinese foreign ministry trod the familiar line on Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar, India's entry into Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The ministry suggested that the issue of India's NSG membership and Azhar, the Pakistan-based terrorist, should not be regarded as an obstacle in bilateral ties.China has blocked India's efforts for a seat at the NSG as well as moves to have Azhar declared a terrorist by UN.

"So these two issues shall not be stumbling blocks for China-India to develop their relationship. We need to look further and seek common ground to maintain our mu tually beneficial cooperation and together seek a solution to these issues," Hua Chunying, ministry spokesperson said.
